The Diploma in Performing Arts (Dance) equips students with a high level of technical, artistic and interpretative skill in dance and provides the opportunity for practical performing experience. Students also study dance history, anatomy and gain the skills to become a self-employed artist.
Students perform in productions which showcase the breadth of dance styles they have mastered during their studies.
Areas covered on this programme include:
- Jazz, ballet, tap, hip hop and lyrical/contemporary dance techniques
- Circus techniques
- Body conditioning/Pilates
- Dance history
- Anatomy and nutrition
- Audition skills
- Creative enterprise
- Dance Styles
Classes are delivered between 8.45am and 3pm. Students have the opportunity to collaborate with students who are studying a variety of performing arts programmes, including circus.
Completion of the Diploma in Performing Arts (Dance) provides a pathway into the third year of the Bachelor of Applied Arts (Performing Arts).
In 2018 students will experience our brand new complex, Te Kāhui Auaha, in the centre of Wellington City. This custom built facility will bring dance together with other art forms offered by both Whitireia and WelTec.
NCEA Level 2 or equivalent, plus evidence of skills/ability/aptitude based on audition and interview
Proven equivalence to domestic entry requirements and IELTS 6.0 (no band lower than 5.5)
